Facebook Integration for iOS 5 Missing

Announced last night at WWDC was the deep system integration of Twitter into Apple's iOS 5, allowing users to easily tweet and share their photos, locations or even bookmarks from Safari. iOS 5 will also now sync your contacts with their respective Twitter profiles automatically.

You will however, still need a dedicated Twitter app to read your tweets.

Now, we're quite surprised with all the Twitter love from Apple, but are confused why there was no mention of Facebook integration. This doesn't quite compute, especially if Apple's going for mass market appeal, as Facebook is far more popular than Twitter in user count.

We think that this could be due to the dispute between Apple and Facebook over the non-inclusion of Facebook in Apple's own music social network, Ping. CEO Steve Jobs has gone on the record to say that Facebook wanted "onerous terms that we could not agree to".

Now, there's still time till the end of September for Apple and Facebook to work out their differences so we may yet see an announcement on Facebook integration. But we aren't holding our breath.

We do however hope that Apple and Facebook can come to an agreement. After all, having Facebook and Twitter integration will let iOS finally catch up to Android, so to speak. It will also make sharing your updates to Facebook much easier.(cnt)
